Interviews on the "red carpet" with Sarah Morgan
An exciting start to the conference! We’ll roll out the red carpet for our experts and participants – and Sarah Morgan will be there to warm you up with short interviews.
Grand opening | The direction of international optometry
We’re kicking off this year’s conference with a deep dive into the industry’s development.
Together with our hosts Philip and Sarah, our key speakers of today will discuss new e-health tools, delegations of tasks and the importance of “owning” core tasks such as refraction and myopia management, even though our profession – may – move in a more advanced medical direction.
Speakers: Lyndon Jones, Marko Lukic, Rune Brautaset, and Pauline Schenk
Experiences in delegating to clinical assistants (PD)
This session is about the advantages of delegating to trained assistants. We ask the experts how and why it can improve treatments and patient satisfaction and save valuable time.
Which tasks are suitable to delegate? What do you have to be careful of? Why can it improve clinical quality?
In this panel discussion, Sarah Morgan will speak to four panellists about these questions on the basis of their best-practice examples.
Speakers: Ian Cameron, Rune Brautaset, Amanda Ljunggren, Erik Ryderberg, and Sarah Morgan (moderator)
Risk factors for glaucoma and when to perform visual fields (MC)
Unfortunately, half of all glaucoma cases today go undiagnosed. The disease is tricky to recognise, as the symptoms look like many other pathologies. Yet it is essential to detect it in time to prevent vision loss.
To be good at knowing when to suspect glaucoma or not, you need to have an overview of all risk factors and how each of them contributes to the complete risk assessment. In this masterclass, led by optometrist Matt Roney, you will be presented with an overview of the risk factors and the right time to test the visual field.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Philip Morgan.
Use of OCT for the posterior and anterior eye (MC)
Optometrists have possibilities for spotting anomalies in the posterior and anterior eye when using an OCT device. The high-quality images can show early signs of pathology and allow for a swift reaction. That is – if we know how to use the scans correctly.
Dr Marko Lukic is a leading expert in the area. He’s also very passionate about sharing his knowledge. In this session, he shows specific cases and images to explain the basic OCT scans and report functions. He’ll advise on when and how to use them.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Jon Gjelle.
Myopia management: When and how? (PD)
For the first time ever, optometrists can start offering myopia treatments to patients. Proper management can help correct refractive errors in time and save a lot of people from worries about their vision. But it requires a solid understanding of the condition and its progression.
Philip Morgan will lead this panel discussion with four expert speakers who’ll talk about the Nordic and global prevalence of myopia. They delve into treatment options and how to track their effectiveness.
Speakers: Pelsin Demir, Mark Bullimore, Elena García Rubio, Penny-Lane Levine, and Philip Morgan (moderator)
Clinical decision-making – three cases from clinical practice (MC)
Doctor of Optometry Arjeta Beqiri hosted a popular session at the Clinical Conference 2021.
Now, she is back with three advanced cases to explain how she used multiple imaging devices to guide her clinical decision-making. Arjeta will describe the more technical part of the benefits and pitfalls of using wide-angle fundus imaging and OCT scans.
But she’ll also explain problem-based approaches so you can structure your examination after each patient’s specific needs.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Jon Gjelle.
Case presentation: presbyopia and toric lenses (MC)
Do you – like many others – struggle with a high drop-out rate when fitting contact lenses for presbyopic and toric patients? Then this is the session for you!
Through a series of patient cases, Danish optometrist and contact lens specialist Ayoe Blohm will tell you about the importance of checking for refraction and errors without contact lenses, managing expectations with the patient, fitting presbyopic and toric lenses correctly, and knowing the whole product portfolio.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Sarah Morgan.

Interviews on the "red carpet" with Sarah Morgan
An exciting start to the conference! We’ll roll out the red carpet for our experts and participants – and Sarah Morgan will be there to warm you up with short interviews.
Grand opening | Good vision for all
We start the second conference day with a panel debate on how to best achieve the World Health Organization’s goal of making “good vision available and affordable for all” globally.
Today’s key speakers will share their thoughts on the way forward for optometry – a way characterised by e-health and new ways of collaborating with ophthalmologists over distance. But also by a potential merging of refractive surgery and cataract surgery.
Speakers: Arthur Cummings, Pauline Schenk, Lars Røssel Ødegaard, and Niels Crama.
Preventative care in optometry (PD)
Thanks to advanced imaging technologies, optometrists can now detect diseases at an early stage – even before the patient experiences symptoms. But with great power comes great responsibility.
Is it okay to check for diseases without the patient asking for it? And how to best communicate accidental findings to patients when you are not the one screening/treating them?
Join this debate and reflect on the role of optometrists in preventative health care.
Speakers: Heidi Buchholt, Lars Røssel Ødegaard, Elisabeth Egeberg, Matti Seppänen, Jiska van Dam-Veldhoen, and Pauline Schenk (moderator)
The patient experience: Delivering more than clinical expertise (MC)
Communication is essential in every clinical interaction we have. But it doesn’t come by chance – it’s a skill that needs to be trained!
Join this session to learn how to upskill your ability to advise patients most constructively. It’s hosted by Amanda Cardwell Carones.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Sarah Morgan.
Vascular changes and the eye (MC)
Join this session and watch Dr Niels Crama explain the physiology of normal blood circulation and the pathophysiology of selected vascular eye diseases.
In this masterclass, Niels helps you recognise vascular changes in the eye due to underlying systemic diseases such as diabetes or conditions like high blood pressure. You’ll get an in-depth understanding of how to analyse changes in the eye. A skill that can help patients, as several underlying diseases can shorten life length and lower life quality.
The moderator of this masterclass will be Jon Gjelle.
How to detect keratoconus and fitting of specialty contact lenses (PD)
A fifth of all patients needs specialty lenses rather than standard ones. Join this session and learn when to suggest alternative lens options and how to detect keratoconus cases.
The condition is often found in patients who are unhappy with their glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is easy to miss in the early stages since it might not create significant problems until presbyopia comes on top.
In this panel discussion, our panellists will advise when to be suspicious and what contact lenses to prescribe.
Speakers: Daddi Fadel, Eef van der Worp, Anne Norvik Jervell, and Philip Morgan (moderator)
What to know about refractive surgery (MC)
Refractive surgery is here to stay. But how do we, as optometrists, tell our patients correctly about the option, its safety, and the expected outcome?
Experts Arthur Cummings and Svein Tindlund will provide you with updated knowledge and answer questions like:
Pre- and post-operative cataract care (MC)
One per cent of the population in Europe undergoes surgery for cataracts every year. It’s the most common pathology you will meet when working as an optometrist.
This session by Lyndon Jones and Danson V. Muttuvelu zooms in on how you can help patients with cataracts. You’ll get in-depth knowledge on the common cystoid macular oedema complication, how you can optimise the outcome by caring about tear film before and after the surgery, and much more!
The moderator of this masterclass will be Erik Ryderberg.
